Myth: ‘Once the divorce is finalised, single parents are all set.’
The post break-up period between separation and divorce can be one of the hardest periods for single parents who enter single parenthood following the breakdown of a relationship. The early days of figuring out who will live where, how custody will be split, how the money will be managed etc can feel incredibly challenging and even completely overwhelming for some. So the conclusion of the divorce process can feel like a weight off your shoulders. However, it’s something of a myth that once your divorce is settled, everything will fall into place and it’s all smooth sailing from there. The truth is that rough waters will continue, storms will arise, circumstances will change, and it’s completely natural to need support throughout all of this. While people may rally around you in the early days of single parenthood, it can feel as though post-divorce this support dries up. This is why it’s key to find ongoing support from within the single parent community with people who ‘get it’ and to seek additional one-to-one help when you need it so that you are in the best place possible for you and your children.
