‘When I became a single parent, I was overwhelmed and unsure where to start. I found myself juggling practical tasks, emotional struggles, a new co-parenting dynamic, work, home responsibilities, and finances, all while trying to be the best parent I could be.

‘Navigating this new path was incredibly tough, and I realised how valuable a coaching programme specifically designed for single parents would have been for me during that time. This inspired me to establish Solas Coaching.

‘Through my Workplace Report I found that work is an issue that hugely impacts single parents’ capacity to succeed and thrive. In addition to my one-to-one coaching services for single parents I also work with businesses to make their workplaces more inclusive and accessible for single parents and families of all shapes and sizes.’

FAQs

What are Orla's coaching qualifications?

1

My background is originally in retail merchandising, a career I loved but found impossible to maintain and progress in whilst balancing the demands of single parenthood. This led me to retrain as a life coach with Animas.

My qualification is a Level Diploma in Transformative Coaching, which is ICF accredited, and I completed it in May 2024.

Alongside my coaching qualification, I bring my own lived experience as a single parent and my research into the experiences of single parents in the workplace.

I also have ongoing coaching supervision, so I have continued professional support and development alongside my coaching practice.

Why did Orla start Solas Coaching?

2

When I first became a single parent, it was during lockdown, which I now see as a blessing in disguise. It gave me the opportunity to get my head around this new way of life before the world opened back up again.

I was the only person in my friendship group to become a single parent and found there was very limited support out there. It wasn’t until I started my coaching course that I tentatively began researching whether supporting single parents could be an option for me.

It was during my research calls that I found out that lots of single parents were secretly struggling with the same things behind closed doors, despite putting on a front to the outside world. From there, I knew I wanted to support single parents.

Why do you offer workplace support?

3

I became curious about my own experience in the workplace. Was it just me, or were other single parents also struggling to juggle a career alongside single parenthood?

My research highlighted loud and clear that it wasn’t just me. There is a huge support gap in workplaces when it comes to supporting single parents, and that gap isn’t just impacting single parents. It’s impacting businesses too.

That led me to really lean into creating a service for corporates that could shine a light on the support gap single parents are facing and help organisations implement real change.

I know just how hard it is to feel like you’re failing in your career as a single parent, when in fact, it’s the system that is failing you.

I’m on a mission to make sure no other single parent has to walk away from a career they love simply because their industry doesn’t cater to or recognise the additional layer of challenges that come with being a single parent.
